But it's just been discovered that broccoli may stop breast cancer in its tracks! The researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have determined that a compound found in broccoli hinders the growth of human breast cancer cells in the laboratory.
It works like a "magic bullet" inhibiting the division and growth of the cancer cells. And since that's the way a lot of cancer fighting drugs work, it's possible that this compound could be used in combination with other drugs to prevent and treat cancer. And the bizarre benefit of broccoli? It may also help ward off all forms of the herpes virus, including cold sores.
Preliminary studies at Ohio University College of Medicine show that there's another compound in broccoli besides the one that fights cancer - that blocks the herpes virus from reproducing by at least 99.9 percent!
While these are all preliminary findings, they certainly may make a big difference. So until they extract those compounds and put them in pill form, it wouldn't hurt to load up on broccoli for dinner.
