Tips for Protecting Your Teeth

Stittsville and Ottawa Family Dentist

If you take good care of your teeth, they may just last you forever. Even better, healthy teeth and gums prevent the system-wide infections that can hurt your heart health. And like a jar of pennies, every little bit helps. So, here are some everyday tips for protecting your teeth, courtesy of Yahoo Health Channel:
  • First, soda may damage the enamel on your teeth. But there’s no need to give it up completely. You can choose less-corrosive sodas, like root beer, that don’t contain citric or phosphoric acids – the acids that eat away at your teeth. Or better yet – use a straw! That’ll help most of the liquid bypass your teeth entirely, as long as you don’t swish your soda around like mouthwash.
  • Clean your teeth after every meal and snack. Cookies, crackers, and candy all seep into the crevices in your teeth – and between them - where bacteria start growing immediately. But if you can’t brush right away, try one of these quick fixes: Rinse your mouth out with water, or chew sugarless gum that contains xylitol, like Trident, Carefree Koolerz, or IceBreakers gum.
  • Also, eat teeth-scrubbing munchies! Crunchy apples and veggies scour your teeth. So, they make for a good “dessert” if you can’t brush after a meal. Or ingest one of these awesome dental bacteria-fighters: cheddar cheese, shiitake mushrooms, or tea.
To recap: to protect your teeth, drink soda through a straw. Every time you eat, rinse, brush, or chew xylitol-sweetened gum. And fight dental bacteria by drinking tea, and grabbing good munchies, like apples, raw veggies, cheddar cheese, or shiitake mushrooms. And you’ll hold onto your teeth a lot longer.
